Valentin Carron

curated by Milovan Farronato

September 20 - October 25, 2008

20 September 2008: Viafarini is pleased to announce Swiss artist Valentin Carron’s solo show. The exhibition will take place both in Viafarini DOCVA, at Fabbrica del Vapore, and VIR VIafarini-in-residence, former venue in via Farini 35. The exhibition will open on the occasion of STARTMILANO vernissage day, at 6:00 pm at VIR VIafarini-in-residence and at 7:00 pm at Viafarini DOCVA, with refreshment.

Valentin Carron (born in Martigny, in 1977 where he currently lives and works) focuses his attention on the concept of heimat, a hard-to-translate German term which mainly involves the idea of homeland, considered both as an ideal origin as well as a cultural context. Carron clearly prefers to evoke the image of a man empathically linked to his own traditions, viscerally rooted to his own “birth village” and its history, rather than a cosmopolitan man who can easily incorporate a plenty of different cultural inputs.

Carron bums around his emotional, experiential and visible landscape, in order to define a limited perimeter which may be able to describe him, his homeland and his surroundings. Austrian philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein metaphorically describes a highly specific field of knowledge as an island measured by a ruler stick, so measuring only the external edge of what surrounds it.
Resignation, as the result of the contemplation of the innumerable possibilities which trascend human limits, is the core mood that inspires Carron’s artistic research. He comes from la Valais, a mountain region full of bucolic valleys, chalets, splendid isolation, romance, porticos and suburbs.

Artist’s emotional landscape will be split into two parts, two distinct spaces presenting two sides of the same exhibition, as two sides of the same coin. In the former Viafarini headquarters (old space) the ruins of the roman colonization, an almost baroque series of black, huge columns, counterbalanced by eclectic liberty gratings, painted in the same black color and modeled as a perfect examples of art brut for fake windows.

In the new exhibition space at Viafarini DOCVA, Valentin Carron will present a series of eight same sized crosses hanged on the wall, each painted in different two-color motifs. In addition, marking the distance from the exhibition set up presented in other space, a single sculpture: a cast of a polymorphus trunk lying on the ground, silently facing the most relevant symbol of western culture.
