April 12 - 28, 2012

On the occasion of the Salone Internazionale del Mobile 2012, Viafarini is glad to present Low Cost Design, a project by Daniele Pario Perra. The exhibition is part of Posti di Vista RI-CREAZIONE, a framework of initiatives coordinated by FDVlab at Fabbrica del Vapore.

Low Cost Design is a touring exhibition with more than five hundred pieces and structures; all of them are related to some change in the use of manufactures itslef, rather than of a specific place. These changes are activated by the deliberate interventions of people from all over the world.
Thanks to our unaffected artistic creativity, pieces and structures designed for accomplish a specific task, are reskilled for other purposes. These tools are associated with technological and cultural means, such as intuition, conceptualizing faculty, chance and error.
The enlisted examples explain the extraordinary adaptability to experiences and the innovative use of local resources. These solutions take place to fulfill everyday needs, halfway between the instinct awareness of a child and the planning ability of an engineer.
The exhibition Low Cost Design can be considered as a visual dictionary that shows a constant relation between “the poetic capability” and “the technological skill”. These anonymous inventors don’t sleep much at all, they invent new objects or modify the one that already exist. These new process break the rules of business planning, displaying the interdisciplinary heritage that connects the design field to social disciplines such as history, economy and politics. Every day new objects are interpreted, re-designed and adapted to new human behaviors. This process entails∫constant flow of spontaneous creativity, that entails logic and absolute selections.

Low Cost Design is an open project, constantly in-progress: feedback, contributions, objects and suggestions on the Website The exhibited objects are documented in Low Cost Design, catalogs volumes I and II, comprising more than eight hundred color illustrations, edited by Silvana Editoriale in 2010 and 2011, both in Italian and in English.
