VIR is the new residence program promoted by Viafarini, which allows selected artists and curators to spend a period of research in Milan. The residence consists of four apartments and two artists studios, located in Viafarini’s original premises in via Carlo Farini 35 in Milan.
The project, aiming at fostering debate and exchange within different cultural realities, is realized with the contribution and the collaboration of PARC Direzione generale per la qualità e la tutela del paesaggio, l'architettura e l'arte contemporanee of the Italian Ministry of Culutre and of ACACIA Associazione Amici Arte Contemporanea Italiana and Gemmo, who granted the firstbursaries for the year 2008.

The apartments and studios are situated in the original premises of Viafarini, whose exhibition activity and documentation services (Library, Portfolio Archive and ArtBox) moved to a new venue at the Fabbrica del Vapore in via Procaccini 4.
Participants of the Viafarini-in-residence program will have access to all information and documentation services, and will be assisted and advised by the Viafarini staff.
Each apartment consists of a two-room-apartment of 30 square metres, with a kitchen room and a study room with an elevated bed area; the studios are gained from the Viafarini exhibition space.

Artists have the opportunity to to establish opportunities of exchange and debate with Italian art professionals, invited by terms of a series of organised studio visits. Curators have access to information and specific databases, useful for understanding the Italian art scene, and will be assisted by the Viafarini staff in getting in touch with its main actors.
During the VIR Open Day at the end of the residency, also the public will be invited to visit the artists’ studios.

The program is addressed to artists and curators.
The residencies can vary from short research journeys to longer stays for the production of specific projects.

The progam is open for application by artists and curators. Further, a number of artists and art professionals who collaborated with Viafarini in the past, function as nominators of young candidates. The selection of the residents and the related award of the bursary is decided by the Viafarini board together with a representative of the respective sponsor.

VIR is supported by sponsors and by partners from the artists' and curators's countries of origin. Since 1996 Viafarini runs a studio for Australian artists and curators, in collaboration with the Australia Council for the Arts.
