Video Invitational - Video in tutti i sensi: Bjørn Melhus

25 gennaio - 6 febbraio 2006

"Weit Weit Weg" (Far, far away)

Questioning how one’s own identity is interwoven in the media’s images of reality, WEIT WEIT WEG looks into the origins of an individual. The adolsecent longing to be somewhere over the rainbow is depicited through the infamous story of Dorthy. Her desires become abstracted in a sea of electronic communications and the developing global village provided through the televised image.

“Far Far Away” proposes as a central theme the loss of subjectivity in the world of the technical image but also puts out the question of the significance of this world in the re-construction of identity. Decidedly narrative, the film tackles the age old theme of growing up/ coming of age, which here is staged as an escape from the childhood playroom. The girl Dorothy (the original sound precursor is taken from the film The Wizard of Oz with Judy Garland) tries to create her Doppelgänger with the help of a mobile phone to ultimately lead this Doppelgänger to her. But this mirror fantasy starts to develop an independent life and wants to become an agent of the big wide world, which repeatedly is shown as TV shows. Towards the end the children’s room becomes smaller and smaller, the mirror image emancipates him/herself from the “original” and develops narcissist masculine traits. The media images turn out to be both projections and mechanisms of control.

Silver City

An installation in two parts, consisting of a projected dialogue between two cowboys taken from the German version of Billy the Kid (USA 1941), correspondingly a second version of this dialogue taking place, between two astronauts orbiting Earth in individual single occupancy space vessels. Silvercity 1+2 present two far-reaching depictions of camaraderie between men and the struggle for survival within the unknown.

Behind the Moon, Beyond the Rain is a continuation of his 1995 film “Weit Weit Weg” (Far Far Away), based on “The Wizard of Oz”, in which he plays the role of Dorothy. From the loneliness of her room in a high-rise housing project, the protagonist uses her mobile phone to create a second identity for herself. Ten years later, Dorothy’s childhood room is imagined by him once again. A telephone call from her alter ego brings out in full relief the time that has passed, as well as her continuing inability to communicate with others.
